Первый миф — один из самых прочных и безобидных во всей антисталиниане. К возникновению мифа причастен и лично Иосиф Виссарионович Сталин. Произошло это следующим образом. Кто-то из его помощников, заполняя за него анкеты и биографические справки в 1921–1922 гг., очевидно, по недоразумению совершил описку. По неизвестной причине Сталин их не поправил. Хотя до этого всегда указывал, что родился в 1878 г. Например, собственноручно заполняя анкету с вопросами о его биографии, адресованной ему шведской левой социал-демократической газетой «Фолькетс дагблад политикен» в 1920 г., Сталин точно указал год своего рождения. Кстати говоря, это единственный документ, где год рождения проставлен рукой Сталина. С того времени и пошел миф о 21 декабря 1879 г. как о дате рождения Сталина. В биографической хронике первого тома собрания сочинений Сталина указано, что он родился 9 (21) декабря 1879 г. Учитывая, что собрание сочинений и биографическая хроника составлялись под личным контролем Сталина, следовательно, в конечном итоге автором мифа об этой дате его рождения следует считать самого Сталина. В конце концов, собрание его сочинений выходило из печати уже после войны, когда с момента впервые допущенной и неисправленной тогда ошибки прошло более четверти века. Соответственно, если он сам не пожелал исправить эти данные, то действительно поневоле приходится считать его автором этого мифа. Тем более что когда впервые этот день рождения был отмечен официально, а произошло это 21 декабря 1929 г.
